Competitor & Acquisition Due Diligence

Separate a real, defensible business from a fad, a commodity, or an IP risk — before you buy or build.

Uses: Keyword Rank, Product Page, Seller Details

The blind spot

A listing (or a business for sale) presents itself as an established, thriving brand. Is it? A "5-year-old brand" can turn out to be a nine-month-old product with a fresh coat of paint — and the public marketplace shows the tells if you know where to look.

How you'd run it

  1. Keyword Rank — demand, price band, and how strong the incumbents are (rank, review counts, sales estimates, badges).
  2. Product Page — title, bullets, Best Sellers Rank, ratings, and date-first-available.
  3. Seller Details — the seller's footprint and legitimacy.

Example

Vetting two businesses under consideration:

  • Caught a "5-year-old brand" that wasn't. The date-first-available and a brand-new ASIN gave it away — really a ~9-month-old product, not an established brand.
  • Sized the real leader vs. the target. The category leader sold ~40,000/mo while the acquisition target was essentially unranked — a very different story than the listing implied.

Illustrative example using representative data. Your live results reflect the marketplace at lookup time.

The payoff

The decision: a go/no-go gate that avoids the most expensive mistake on Amazon — sinking capital into a category or "brand" you can't win or that isn't what it claims. Real, defensible, and priced right, or pass.
